Counseling, also known as therapy, is a general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a mental health provider. During therapy, a participant learns about their condition, as well as, their moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Counseling helps participants become empowered to take control of their life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills. There are many specific types of therapy, each with its own approach. The type of therapy that’s right for the participant depends on the individual situation. Therapy is also known as talk therapy, counseling, psychosocial therapy, or psychotherapy.
